Jeff Hammerbacher, Senior Advisor, is a scientist, entrepreneur, and investor, whose career has spanned technology, healthcare and life sciences, finance, and nonprofits.
In technology, Jeff was the Manager of the Data team at Facebook from 2006 – 2008, where his team pioneered the use of the job title “Data Scientist” and created the Hive and Cassandra open source database systems. Jeff left Facebook to found Cloudera in 2008, serving as the VP of Product and Chief Scientist until the company went public in 2017.
In healthcare and life sciences, Jeff was the Principal Investigator at Hammer Lab from 2013 – 2019, affiliated with Mount Sinai from 2013 – 2017 and MUSC from 2017 – 2019. The lab focused primarily on cancer immunotherapy, contributing to neoantigen vaccine design, immune checkpoint blockade biomarker discovery, and optimization of cell therapies. Jeff also founded Related Sciences, a biotech venture creation firm, and served as Managing Partner from 2019 – 2021.
In finance, Jeff began his career as a quantitative analyst in the fixed income group of Bear Stearns from 2005 – 2006. Since 2008, he has been an early stage investor in over 180 companies and 10 funds through his family office Techammer, which he operates together with his wife Halle Tecco. In private equity, he has served as a Senior Advisor for Sixth Street from 2022 – 2024 and as an Operating Advisor to Blackstone from 2023 – 2024.
In nonprofits, Jeff was a founder of The Covid Tracking Project in 2020, and is a founder and co-CEO of the Open Athena AI Foundation since 2024.
Jeff has served on the board of several New Mountain Capital companies, including Datavant, Cytel, emids, PerkinElmer, Emmes, and Grant Thornton.
Jeff graduated from Harvard University in 2005 with an AB in Mathematics.
